It's not exactly right to you or me--because we're people. But to Google and other search engine "spiders" that crawl the web--those keywords up there are just what they're looking for. Why? Because those are the words people are looking for. It's a bit of a "catch-22".

So, why didn't I just write my headline this way...

First you have to understand how search engines work, and then it makes much more sense. Typically, when you go to "Google" something online, you don't type in an entire sentence, right? You type in the main words--or KEYWORDS--that describe what you are searching for. For instance, you don't type in... "I am looking for ways to make money online". You search using only the main words... "ways make money online" or "make money online" or even "make money". While adding more keywords to a search narrows and specifies your results, including filler words such as "I" "for" "to" "a" & "and" doesn't help you get better results so most people don't bother typing them in. So, back to those "spiders"... Obviously search engines keep records of what people are searching for, so in order to be competitive they need to provide listings of websites that provide just what their visitor wants. So they created "spiders". Basically a search engine spider is a computer program that travels the internet, crawling from website to website through links. They continuously "read" websites, indexing the words found on each site. Google and the others use the information retrieved by their spiders to match up keywords to search results. Of course, as quickly as they were developed, some unscrupulous website owners found ways to provide the spiders what they wanted without providing the content people want.

Search engines know that people are really irritated when the only results they get from a search are annoying sites full of ads, "link farms", & pop ups that aren't offering anything but sales pitches.

So, to weed out the bad sites, (and this is a constantly evolving battle) they've come up with processes such as meta tags, sitemaps and other keyword requirements that websites must conform to in order to rank well.

And let's face it, as a small-time website owner, you can build the flashiest, most expensive, masterfully designed site, but if you don't rank well at the search engines, very few people will ever see it.
